What Would They Read Wednesday, #scandal edition

If I was the Lavender Oaks High School media specialist... first, I would totally try to help out Lucy! I'd help her data sleuth, and I'd listen to her, and I'd try to help her fight the bullies. Ok, maybe that's a little too hands-on. But still, I'd at least be a listening ear! And I could totally give book recommendations to the characters.

For Lucy, I'd recommend Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell. First, this is a book set in the 1980s, so there's no social media! She can escape in this cute-sweet novel about two teens falling in love via exchanged handwritten notes and personalized mix tapes. She would also be able to identify with Eleanor, as she's bullied, too- just for different reasons.

For Jayla Heart, I'd recommend Between You and Me by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus. This is about a girl who grew up "normal" then became famous, and about how that impacts her relationship with her cousin. Jayla also grew up in a "normal" household before becoming famous, and maybe she could learn from the main character in Between You and Me. She could learn how to have a better relationship with her sister, despite the fame!

For Asher, I'd recommend Little Brother by Cory Doctorow. It takes place in the not-so-distant future, where all of Asher's worst fears have come true: the school is crazy on top of monitoring all students' web activity. Everyone in society is hooked up to the 'net all the time. When a terrorist attack happens in his hometown, the main character is blamed and held by the government. Asher would love cheering him on, and learning all the hacker moves used to prove his innocence!

For fun... I'd recommend Black Beauty to Prince Freckles! (Of course!) This classic story about a much-beloved horse would definitely warm Prince Freckles' heart. After allowing himself to be glitterfied, he deserves an entertaining read!
